03H. When in Vilnius

Acabei de me aperceber o quão difícil é escrever sobre a cidade em que se vive... o que dizer, o que não dizer! Acho que escrevi e apaguei umas 5 vezes antes de finalmente acertar! Escolhi de forma cuidadosa as minhas palavras porque quero que conhecem ou que, pelo menos, tentem conhecer Vilnius! Embora só esteja cá há 2 semanas já parece que estou em casa :)

Há tantas coisas para ver e fazer que se torna difícil escolher apenas as 'melhores'.. De qualquer forma, este não será, de certeza, o último post sobre Vilnius.

I just realized how hard it can be to write about the city you live in.. what to say, what not to say! I wrote and deleted this about 5 times before actually coming up with this post! I chose my words carefully, I wanted you guys to know, or try to know, more about this beautiful city. Despite the fact that I only arrived here 2 weeks ago, it feels just like home :)

There are so many things to see and to do that it becomes difficult to narrow it down to just a few, supposedly, best ones! I'll try! Anyway this won't be, for sure, my last post about Vilnius.

Sabem aqueles bairros super artísticos e cheios de vida? Užupis é assim! Está separado de Old Town pelo rio Vilna e é a 'casa' de muitos poetas, músicos e artistas!

Para os que não sabem, Užupis auto proclamou-se uma República em 1997 e tem a sua própria bandeira e Constituição traduzida em mais de 23 línguas! Sob o lema, "Não lutes, Não ganhas, Não te rendas" é, sem dúvida, um lugar que torna Vilnius ainda mais especial.

You know those neighborhoods full os life and artistic style? That's Užupis! Separated from Old Town by the river Vilna, it's a house for many poets, musicians and all sort of artists!

For those who don't know, Užupis declared itself a Republic in 1997 and has it own flag and constitution translated into 23 languages! Following the anthem: "Don't Fight, Don't Win, Don't Surrender", it's definitely a place that makes Vilnius even more special.

Todas as cidades tem um prestigiado museu que é obrigatório visitar. Em Vilnius, esse museu é o das Vitimas do Genocídio, mesmo no coração de Old Town. Como é possível imaginar, por nos contar sobre um dos períodos mais difíceis da história da lituana, é um lugar com enorme simbolismo e carga emocional. Podem esperar conhecer um pouco melhor a história de milhares de pessoas que foram mortas, aprisionadas e deportadas pela União Soviética desde a 2º Guerra Mundial até aos anos 60. Acima de tudo, é um lugar que honra os Lituanos.

Every city has a well known museum that is mandatory to visit. In Vilnius, that museum is the Genocide Victims Museum right in the heart of Old Town. As you can imagine, this place has a deep meaning since it shows us a sad period of Lithuanian history. You can expect to get to know the stories of all those murdered, imprisoned and deported by the Soviet Union from WWII to the 60's. Above all, it's a place that honors Lithuania.

Must Do

Vai uma caminhada até Gediminas Hill e apreciar a vista? Entre muitos degraus e neve, no caso de irem no inverno ou no inicio da primavera, vale, sem dúvida, a pena o esforço.. no topo, têm uma vista panorâmica sob a cidade, ver o contraste entre as casas coloridas e as cores escuras da natureza ou tentar contar os milhares de igrejas que Vilnius tem! Os telhados e parques são um must!

Climb all the way to Gediminas Hill and take a moment to appreciate the view! In between stairs and snow (if during the winter and some part of spring) it's totally worth the effort.. you'll be able to have a panoramic view of the city, to take a look at all the colorful houses and how they're mixed with the dark colors of trees and the incredible amount of churches that Vilnius has! Beautiful roofs and parks are a must!

Must Try

Mesmo quem não é fã de batata, se vem a Lituânia tem de comer! Não é propriamente difícil visto que, 90% dos pratos típicos daqui têm batata ou carne, portanto.. As refeições em Vilnius são, regra geral, muito baratas, por isso, diria que um almoço tipicamente lituano não custa mais de 5€. O prato mais 'comum' é Cepelinai, algo como batata com carne lá dentro e um molho, se não parece muito apelativo, podem sempre experimentar panquecas de batata (há imensas variações deste prato, para quem não quer só batata).

Even if you're not a fan of potatoes if you come to Lithuania you got to eat them. I mean, I would say 90% of their typical dishes have either potato or meat so it's not really a choice! Meals in Vilnius are generally quite cheap so I would say you won't spend more than 5€ on a proper Lithuanian lunch.

I would advice you to either try Cepelinai (some sort of potato with meat inside) or potato pancakes which have some variation if you don't want just potato.
