04H. Surviving in The Snow

Quem me conhece sabe que estou sempre com frio. Sempre. Acho que é possível imaginar o pânico: se tens frio em Portugal, como vais sobreviver na Lituânia?

Aqui ficam algumas dicas de como me preparei para um clima tão diferente! Espero que seja útil :)

My closest friends know that I'm always cold. Always. I believe it's not difficult to picture everyones panic: if you're cold in Portugal how will you survive in Lithuania? Here are some tips of how I prepared myself for such a different weather! I hope it's useful :)

1. Casaco | Coat

Imprescindível! Convêm que, de preferência, seja quente, respirável e relativamente comprido; os melhores são os que têm penas ou são térmicos, contudo, nem sempre pode compensar a pelo tempo e local para que se viaja.

Indispensable! Preferably, it's warm, breathable and rather long; the best ones are those who either have feathers or are thermal, however, it might not always be worth buying, it depends on the weather and the place you travel to.

2. Botas | Boots

Se for um destino com neve, mesmo que não seja muito intensa, umas botas com pelo e que sejam impermeáveis é o ideal; o impermeável porque quando a neve derrete fica água, óbvio, e com pelo por causa do frio, todos sabemos que pés frios é sinónimo de frio no corpo todo. Se, como eu, vão por um período prolongado e as temperaturas podem descer até aos -20º, podem optar por botas com forro térmico, vai permitir que estejam sempre super quentes.

If it's a place with snow, even if not that dense, boots with wool and that are waterproof is ideal. Waterproof because when snow melts it turns into water, obviously, and with wool because we all know that if we have our feet cold, the rest of the body will also be cold. If, like me, you're going away for a long period of time and the temperatures can be as low as -20º, it may be useful to chose thermic boots, it will allow you to always be warm.

3. Camadas | Layers

Em climas frios é obrigatório utilizar várias camadas de roupa, mas, a primeira é a mais importante. Preferencialmente, uma camisola térmica ou uma 'segunda pele', depois um polar e o casaco, supostamente, será o suficiente, depois, consoante a pessoa, mais ou menos camisolas. É importante ressaltar que, por mais que as camisolas sejam quentes, senão forem respiráveis o efeito é muito menor porque nos faz transpirar e, consequentemente, ficar mais frios.

In cold climates it is mandatory to wear multiple layers of clothes, but, the first one is the most importante one. The best option would be to buy a thermal shirt or a 'second skin', after that, a polar jacket and then the coat. I suppose that's enough but it depends on the person. It is important to emphasize that, even if the jacket is warm enough, if it's not breathable it will not have the same effect..

4. Luvas, Gorro e Meias | Gloves, Beanie and Socks

É impossível imaginar andar na rua com graus negativos e não ter estas três coisas! Um gorro bem quentinho, umas meias extremamente respiráveis e umas luvas, se possível, duas até: umas um pouco mais finas que permitam mexer no telemóvel e manusear as coisas e umas mais grossas por cima para realmente ficarmos quentes.

It is impossible to think of walking on the streets with negative temperatures and not have these 3 things! A really warm beanie, some extremely warm and breathable socks and gloves. If possible, wear two pairs of gloves: some thiner ones, that allow you to use your phone and some thicker one to keep you really warm.

5. Extras (que não são extras) | Extras that are not extras

Visto que na Lituânia está, quase sempre, graus negativos, há algumas coisas que andam sempre na minha mochila: batom do cieiro (o frio faz com que os lábios fiquem extremamente secos), creme para as mãos e para a cara, água (essencial para hidratar o corpo em baixas temperaturas) e óculos de sol, quando está algum vento torna-se impossível suportar o frio na cara, em especial nos olhos. Alguém pelo Natal me ofereceu daqueles aquecedores de mãos que tanto dão para o frio, como para o quente, e é excelente em algumas ocasiões.

Since in Lithuania are almost always negative temperatures, there are some things that I always carry around with me: lip salve (the cold makes your lips extremely dried), hand cream, water (essential to hydrate our body on low temperatures) and sunglasses, when there's wind it's almost unbearable the cold on our face. A friend got me this hand heater for Christmas that is really useful on some occasions.
